Maundy Thursday Communion Service

  • John Knox Church High Street Stewarton (map)

Our Maundy Thursday reflective service is a ‘tenebrae’ service (from the Latin for ‘shadows’).

The purpose of the service is to recreate the betrayal, abandonment, and agony of the events of Holy Week, and it is left unfinished, because the story isn’t over until Easter Day.

This is done through Bible readings, reflections and hymns with the lights put out gradually throughout the service in expectation of the new light of Easter Day.
